Orca
Council has been involved for the past two years in a project called
Books for Babies.
Its goal is to collect new books for infants so that all children in our service area can go home from the hospital with a new book. Like many important projects, this one started small but continues to grow. Puyallup leaders Kim Knight and Jenny Conrad approached Orca staff during the spring of 2003 to make Books For Babies a council wide service project. Soon the project was adopted and promotion began. The 2003 and the 2004 Birthday events were dedicated to collecting baby books as was the Make A Difference Day event last October. Janet Hunter’s club was unable to attend the 2004 birthday celebration, but asked how they could help with the Books for Babies project. They collected the books, the diapers, the book marks, the brochures and library information. At a club meeting they assembled the books, and then delivered to the local hospital. Together, on Camp Fire’s 94th birthday and Absolutely Incredible Kid Day, we were able to give 60 newborn babies their very first book!
