Trip to Yakima: Saturday, August 28 Return Trip: Either Monday, September 27 or Tuesday, September 28 Camp Fire USA Orca Council takes part each year in a unique fundraising event called the Convoy. Under Washington State Patrol escort, Camp Fire volunteers drive a convoy of Japanese military vehicles from the Port of Tacoma to Yakima, Washington. Several weeks later, the volunteers are bussed to Yakima to bring the vehicles back again. Through these efforts, Camp Fire's dedicated volunteers raise tens of thousands of dollars each year to support Camp Fire's youth programs. The amount varies depending upon the number of vehicles driven. There is usually a wide range of vehicles, however all of them have manual transmissions and the steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle. A CDL license is required for the larger vehicles only. In 2010, the Convoy will travel to Yakima on Saturday, August 28 and the return trip will be Monday, September 27 or Tuesday, September 28 (return date has not been finalized yet). [Please note, these dates may be different from the ones sent out in our original mailing.] This year a new shipper will be coordinating the project and a new credential will be required for access to secure areas at the facilities involved. This credential is called a TWIC card and we must have at least one TWIC cardholder for every 5 non-TWIC cardholders. If you have a TWIC, please let Sheryl know ASAP at (253) 370-8241. To learn more about driving in the Convoy, call (253) 597-6234 or e-mail info@campfireusaorca.org. If you would like to drive in the Convoy, click here to download a Driver Application form. Please complete the form and fax or mail to us as soon as possible.
Thank you, drivers—you're terrific!
